Dear Mrs Smith

Position of Supervising Editor

I saw the advertisement for the post of Supervising Editor on your website and am very keen to apply.   Being a supervising editor for your company would be an incredible opportunity, I would like to work at your company particularly because it already strong and growing reputation in the film production industry.

Over the past 3 years I have worked at a local production company, creating numerous adverts and small scale films for numerous companies. I was required to undertake all post production editing, with help from the assistant editor. I have also helped small companies that make short films for the website YouTube. On several occasions they have contacted me individually, requesting help with my post production editing expertise, wanting their work to be finished at a professional level. My proudest work would be working on the film series The Hunger Games, I was an assistant editor for all three of the current films, and I am set to continue this role for the last instalment.

I specialise in a wide variety of editing techniques, using these techniques to create the best final edits possible. I am an intense learner so when it comes to creating work for specific directors, I am easily able to change the editing style I use. I am a great team player, offering many ideas for the film itself and different editing techniques to use in the process. I have done lots of work with VFX in the past, I know it is not the job description, but i feel that it links heavily to post production editing because I can use that knowledge and perhaps add some VFX features such as compositing.

I would be delighted to discuss my application further at an interview. Please contact me on 07971244167 or at benjamindavis91@live.com if you need any additional information.

Thank you for your consideration

Yours sincerely,

Ben Davis

3. BBC Purposes

The Charter

The Royal Charter is the constitutional basis for the BBC. It sets out the public purposes of the BBC, guarantees its independence, and outlines the duties of the Trust and the Executive Board. The current Charter runs until 31 December 2016. The image to the right is the contents page to the legitimate Royal Charter that the BBC use. As you can see it displays lots of different things, from the terms of the Charter to guidance of how to use the constitution.

The BBC Trust

The Trust is separate from the Executive Board which is led by the Director-General. The Executive Board is responsible for the operational delivery of BBC services and the direction of BBC editorial and creative output in line with the framework set by the Trust.

They set the strategic objectives for the BBC.
They have challenged the BBC to:
1) Increase the distinctiveness and quality of output;
2) Improve the value for money provided to licence fee payers
3) Set new standards of openness and transparency and do more to serve all audiences.

The BBC offer lots of purposes for members of the public, this include:

  • Sustaining Citizenship and civil society. - The BBC provides high-quality news, current affairs and factual programming to engage its viewers, listeners and users in important current and political issues.
  • Promoting education and learning. - The support of formal education in schools and colleges and informal knowledge and skills building.
  • Stimulating creativity and cultural excellence. - Encouraging interest, engagement and participation in cultural, creative and sporting activities across the UK.
  • Representing the UK. - BBC viewers, listeners and users can rely on the BBC to reflect the many communities that exist in the UK.
  • Bringing the UK to the world and the world to the UK. - The BBC will build a global understanding of international issues and broaden UK audiences' experience of different cultures.
  • Delivering to the public the benefit of emerging communications technologies and services. - Assisting UK residents to get the best out of emerging media technologies now and in the future.

BBC Funding

The BBC gets their funding from a yearly subscription for everyone that has a television. If people want to view BBC's footage they have to pay the £145.50 fee. This amount goes on all of BBC's platforms, Television, Radio, Online and Other Costs. Once you have paid the fee you are applicable for their whole package. The BBC doesn't get any of their funding from advertising, which is somewhat better because it means that there are no annoying adverts in the middle of your favourite shows. Which is different to almost all other television channels.
Our BBC Visit

We visited the BBC headquarters in London. We were given an in-depth tour around the BBC news room and into their old building. We began learning about the history of the BBC and how many countries they actually broadcast to. They broadcast to a huge 200 different countries, around 300 million households world wide and weekly they broadcast to around 166 million people globally. We went to their older building and learnt about the older ways of broadcasting, the majority was via radio, and one of the most popular feature was the radio plays. We had a go at creating our own radio play and we listened back to it afterwards.

5. Slumdog Millionaire Case study

Slumdog Millionaire: Global Film?

Read the case study on Slumdog Millionaire and answer the following questions:

  1. Explain where the storyline for the film came from. Give examples.
The storyline came from Vikram Swarup, an Indian diplomat in London. He is the author of the Slumdog Millionaire novel. Then Simon Beaufoy read the book and decided to make a screenplay, thinking that it would be successful. Danny Boyle then saw that the well known screenplay writer Simon Beaufoy wrote it and he decided to take on the mantle of becoming the films director.

  1. List the ways in which Simon Beaufoy changed the story. Explain why this was done.
Beaufoy changed the central character to being a muslim and one of two brothers from a Mumbai slum. His name was changed to Jamal. In the novel the character is an orphan brought up in an English clergyman's house in Delhi. A number of the subplots are removed to make the main story clearer. And the romance aspect is more dominant and runs across the whole storyline.

  1. How did Tessa Ross and Christian Colson arrange funding?
To arrange the funding Ross and Colson had to first establish the rights to use the 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' name and content in the film. After they achieved that they could then sell the distribution rights to companies in the UK and Ireland.

  1. Explain the term ‘Bollywood’ (p. 165/168)
Bollywood is a popular cinema made in Hindi, the official language of India, understood by about 40% of the population.

  1. What was the impact of Warner Bros closing it’s ‘specialist’ film labels on the distribution of Slumdog Millionaire? How was this resolved? (p. 166)
The impact on Slumdog Millionaire was that the films future was thrown into doubt. It meant that the film may be pushed straight to DvD in North America which would drastically decrease the films popularity.

  1. Slumdog Millionaire is not a Hollywood film. Explain how it has been caught between Hollywood and Bollywood. (p. 167-170)
Many viewers think it it a British film, this is because of how successful the film had become which was completely accidental. The film appealed to both audiences of Bollywood and Hollywood so it succeeds in both markets and then around the world.

  1. In your opinion, what made Slumdog Millionaire a successful film? Discuss pre-production, production, distribution and exhibition.
I think that the film was so successful because of the touching storyline that everybody could relate to. The production was filmed in India with the majority of the crew being Indian. This meant that the relationship between the crew and the actors, who were also Indian, could thrive and the acting from them excel. The distribution of the film was from Fox Searchlight, which is a huge Hollywood distribution company, so the sales of the film would be higher.
